Domestic dust up possible for Haye before wanted Klitschko battle
Published:The ultimate goal of David Haye’s latest return to the ring is almost certainly to put right unfinished business with the Klitschko brothers, but he may need to be a mandatory title challenger to secure such a fight.
A rematch with Wladimir would surely be the fight most desired by Haye, especially given the disappointment of not being able to settle the score with Carl Thompson following his defeat in 2004.
It could take two fights to move into such a position and stepping into an all-British battle may be the best way to keep his profile as high as possible.
The British scene is strong at the moment, with George Groves and Carl Froch potential opponents in the not too distant future, while Kell Brook against Amir Khan is not as unlikely as it may once have been.
Tyson Fury’s profile is certainly on the rise and if Haye was to stop him, he would seemingly be ready.
Should Haye fight Fury, it is 2/5 that the former WBA heavyweight champion emerges victorious, with Fury the 2/1 underdog.
Alternatively, David Price is another possible opponent and what better way for the former Olympic bronze medallist to get his career back on track after a surprise KO defeat to Tony Thompson than to beat Haye.
Haye would be 2/7 to beat Price, with the opposite result priced at 11/4.
Ladbrokes have also priced up a showdown with unbeaten WBA ‘Regular’ champion Alexander Povetkin, who has not lost in 25 professional bouts.
Financial issues appear to have scuppered previous plans for Povetkin to face Wladimir Klitschko and so a clash with Haye may be the biggest he can secure at present.
Haye is 1/4 to get the better of Povetkin should the pair square off.
