Taylor Swift may be best non-favourite to join Emeli Sande as Brit winner

Published:

If one musician claimed a hefty portion of the limelight in 2012 then it was Emeli Sande and more of the same should be expected at the Brits, where she is a heavy favourite to claim at least two awards.

Slightly surprisingly, Sande has still only had two UK number one singles and both of these have been collaborations, but her performances at both the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics stick out.

She has nominations in three categories at the Brits and based on the betting she is nailed on to land the gongs for Best Female Solo Artist and Best British Album.

Sande is no stranger to Brits recognition, having won the Critic’s Choice award 12 months ago and this time is 1/8 to secure the Best Female artist, where the main competition comes from Amy Winehouse and Paloma Faith.

The Best British Album award is not so clear-cut, but Sande remains the 1/5 favourite with Our Version of Events.

Mumford and Sons are the big threats at 4/1 with their album Babel and sneaking this award would be the icing on their cake.

The west London band should also have a productive night given that they are 1/3 to be crowned the Best Group.

Many of the awards are expected to go to the favourites, with Ben Howard at 3/10 to win Best Male Solo Artist and Frank Ocean at 4/9 to be named Best International Male looking among the other bankers.

For punters wanting to go against the favourites, Taylor Swift is performing on the night and at 13/8 looks fair value to trump 1/2 favourite Lana Del Rey in the Best International Female category.

Meanwhile, Jake Bugg at 7/1 is not without a chance of upsetting Rita Ora for Best Breakthrough Act despite her run of number ones, and the Best British Single is a slight lottery as it is voted for by the public.

Adele’s Skyfall is 1/4 to win, but if it is teenagers that do the majority of the voting, Troublemaker by Olly Murs may be overpriced at 12/1.
