Former England chief 8/1 to make Premier League return

After an unsuccessful return to English football with Nottingham Forest saw him embark upon a second stint in charge of FC Twente, Steve McClaren finds himself on the football scrapheap again.

And Ladbrokes go 8/1 regarding the possibility of him returning as manager of a top-flight English club this summer.

McClaren left his post citing the ‘best interests of the club’ following a six-game winless streak that had seen Twente fall to fifth place in the Eredivisie.

Still only five points adrift of leaders PSV Eindhoven, it is thought the hierarchy at the Dutch club were reluctant to see McClaren go, but accepted his resignation nonetheless.

He could now look to return to England in the summer following a short sabbatical, in the hope of once again proving a capable manager in his own country.

Somewhat ironically considering his perceived harsh treatment by the Dutch media in the latter stages of his Twente career, McClaren had previously been held in high regard by the English media in particular.

He spent successful stints as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant manager, and as a boss at Middlesbrough where he landed League Cup silverware as well as steering the club to a UEFA Cup final.

And those achievements ultimately led to McClaren’s demise in the English game, following his failure to guide England to Euro 2008 qualification after being appointed national team boss.

Since then, his only venture into management back on his native soil was an aforementioned ill-fated tenure with Championship outfit Forest in 2011, which spanned only 10 games.

As such, McClaren still has a point to prove back in England, and would be likely to relish the challenge of a return, should the opportunity present itself.

With the managerial merry-go-round sure to be in full swing by the summer, there are sure to be worse bets than McClaren making a Premier League return at 8/1.
