Di Canio fancied to replace himself as Swindon manager
Published:Many punters may have expected Paolo Di Canio to target a job in the Premier League after resigning as Swindon manager, but instead he finds himself in the somewhat strange position of being named his own successor at The County Ground.
Di Canio has clearly been frustrated in the past month, particularly when Matt Ritchie left the club for Bournemouth in the transfer window, despite the manager allegedly not giving his consent.
This then continued when the club’s prospective new owners failed to complete their takeover in the window initially agreed and Di Canio cited a host of broken promises as his reason for quitting.
However, there is still the belief that Di Canio can be persuaded to go back on his resignation if the takeover is indeed pushed through in the coming days.
After all, Di Canio may want to finish the job that he started at Swindon, securing their promotion from League Two as champions last season and now sitting in the League One play-off places, just three points off table-toppers Bournemouth.
It is 11/10 that Di Canio does replace himself at Swindon, while the 8/1 on offer that his next managerial position is at West Ham may tempt some.
Current Hammers boss Sam Allardyce is yet to sign an extension on his present deal that expires at the end of this season and Di Canio’s playing history with the club makes him a popular choice of the supporters.
Although such a move will present a bold risk, not only because Di Canio has no top-flight managerial experience, but also because Swindon have had their fair share of in-house problems under his stewardship.
