Barca bankers but four Spanish clubs can go on in Champions League

Published:

All four Spanish teams made it through the group stages of the Champions League into the knockout rounds and the next question is how many of them will continue their run in the competition into the quarter finals?

It is 8/1 that Barcelona, Real Madrid, Valencia and Malaga all win through their second-round matches, but it is expected that at least one will falter.

Based on the betting, Valencia are at most risk as they are heavy underdogs to advance past PSG over two legs, while it is virtually a coin toss when it comes to picking a winner between Malaga and Porto.

Punters can get 7/4 that exactly three La Liga clubs make the quarter finals, with the shortest price in this market being the 5/4 that only two qualify.

Barcelona have progressed past AC Milan on the last two occasions that they have met in the Champions League knockout phases, while enjoying a seven-game unbeaten streak against the seven-time competition winners.

A positive result at the San Siro would seemingly be vital to Milan’s hopes of progressing, but they took just two points at home in the group stages, including being held by Malaga.

Barcelona are short at 1/6 to qualify, but this is hard to oppose.

Although this game stands out because it is between two of the competition’s most successful teams, more eyes will almost certainly be on the clash between Real Madrid and Manchester United.

Not only does this see Cristiano Ronaldo line up against his former club for the first time, but it also provides the next chapter in the rivalry between Jose Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson.

This clubs have met four times in the knockout rounds of the competition and intriguingly on three occasions the victors have also won the tournament.

Madrid have triumphed in the two meetings this century, while teams managed by Mourinho win more than they lose against Man Utd.

Real Madrid are 4/6 to qualify this time and a tempting 9/2 to win the Champions League.

The good news for Valencia ahead of facing PSG is that they are unbeaten since 1980 against French opposition, which is a run of 17 games.

They have also won all eight previous home games against clubs from France and can be backed at 11/8 to dump out David Beckham’s new club.

Meanwhile, Malaga are still unbeaten in their first Champions League campaign and are 10/11 to qualify at the expense of Porto.
