Aston Villa v West Ham: expect a hard fought stalemate

Published:

It almost goes without saying that it’s been a miserable 2013 for Aston Villa.

They are winless this calendar year and have been slashed to 8/15 to be playing Championship football next season.

They have a dismal home record (they’ve won just twice at Villa Park this term) and ‘boast’ the worst defensive record in the entire division.

Based on those stats, the 6/4 offered for them to pick up a victory looks rather short.

Meanwhile, things are going relatively well for West Ham on their return to the Premier League. Their 1-0 victory over Swansea last weekend created some much needed space between them and the bottom three and they’re 9/5 to pick up all three points against the Villains this Sunday.

They saw off Paul Lambert’s men 1-0 at home earlier in the season and another 1-0 victory for the Irons can be backed at 8/1.

However, West Ham have the worst away attack in the entire Premier League and have won just two of their league games away from east London this season.

In fact, they haven’t won away from home since a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United back in November. That’s seven away games without a win – a run that’s seen them lose each of their last four.

This has all the hallmarks of a game that will more closely resemble a couple of drunks fighting outside a pub than a real footballing contest which is why a low-scoring draw looks the bet to take on – a result that wouldn’t be disastrous for either side.

A 1-1 scoreline can be backed at 11/2 while it’s currently 7/1 that it finishes goalless.
