Everton v West Brom: Martinez set for first win

Published:

Roberto Martinez’s Everton began their campaign in the manner many would have expected, with an exciting if dangerously open performance in the 2-2 draw with Norwich.

However Martinez will know that three points is expected at home to West Brom, and Everton are 4/7 favourites to beat the Baggies at Goodison Park.

Arouna Kone could start his first match, and having scored one in each game against West Brom for Wigan under Martinez last season, he is a good bet to bag the opener at 11/2.

Ross Barkley turned in one of the stand-out performances of the first weekend, and given his attacking role in Martinez’s formation, he is a fair choice to score anytime at 5/1.

West Brom were uninspiring in their 1-0 home loss to Southampton, and the absence of Nicolas Anelka – whatever the reason – will not help them against Everton.

The Baggies will be looking to new signing Scott Sinclair to provide the ammunition for Shane Long and Matej Vydra, who are both 9/1 to score the first goal.

Long scored in both matches against Everton last season, and is the better bet of the pair.

Martinez will likely set his team up in the same adventurous style as he did at Norwich, with Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman given free rein to rove forward down their flanks.

If they are as open as they were at Carrow Road, then backing both teams to score at 3/4 could prove fruitful, as could betting on over 3.5 goals at 7/4.

Last season this fixture ended 2-1 to Everton, with Baines scoring twice, and the same scoreline can be backed at 8/1.
