Away record suggests Brighton will at least get replay with Newcastle

Published:

Even with Demba Ba in their ranks, Newcastle have not managed to win an away game in any competition this season, so there is little to suggest that things will improve in the FA Cup at Brighton.

Newcastle are slight favourites at 6/4 to end this sequence at Brighton and at least Papiss Cisse is running into a bit of form with two goals in his last three appearances.

At 17/10, Brighton look on the short side to back for victory, especially as they have only beaten the current bottom four in the Championship at the Amex Stadium this season.

Furthermore, their victory at Ipswich last time ended a run of five league fixtures without taking maximum points.

Taking all of this into consideration, the draw is a tempting option at 12/5, but slight preference is for Brighton at 1/1 in the draw no bet market, with all stakes refunded should the game end all square.

This fixture is a repeat of an FA Cup fourth round meeting last season, which Brighton came through 1-0.

Newcastle didn’t have Cisse or key defender Fabricio Coloccini that day, but were in far greater form at that time and could call upon the creative midfield services of Hatem Ben Arfa and Yohan Cabaye, who are both out of this clash.

It is certainly a justified point that Newcastle are weaker this time and clearly struggling for form.

Meanwhile, Newcastle’s shoddy away form this season has already been highlighted, but punters have to look back to 2006 and a victory at Cheltenham to find the last time Newcastle triumphed in an FA Cup away game.

This is compared to Brighton, who have not been eliminated from the FA Cup at home since 2008 and have been beaten in just one of their last 12 in the competition on their own patch.
