Aussie Open – Who do you think will be victorious in Melbourne?
Published:The first major sporting event of 2013 starts next week at the Australian Open as Novak Djokovic goes in search of a place in the history books.
Defending champion Djokovic is bidding to become the first male player to win the event three years in a row.
The world number one is the 11/10 tournament favourite and his chances have been boosted after Rafael Nadal, his opponent in last year’s final, was forced to withdraw due to illness.
Djokovic has shown himself to be the best hardcourt player in the world in recent years, but he will face stiff competition from Andy Murray and Roger Federer.
Murray is growing in stature following his US Open success last year and is 11/4 to end Djokovic’s dominance Down Under, with Federer 4/1 to win his 18th Grand Slam crown.
In the women’s singles, Serena Williams is bidding to win her third consecutive Grand Slam title after victories at Wimbledon and US Open in 2012.
Preparations for this year’s Aussie Open have gone smoother for 10/11 favourite Williams in comparison to this time 12 months ago, when she was hampered by a foot injury.
