Six outsiders worth a punt at Alexandra Palace

This year’s Ladbrokes World Darts Championship has been described as one of the most open ever.

Some pundits are having a hard time picking a winner, meaning some more unusual names could lift the trophy on New Year’s Day.

Here we profile six players worth an each-way bet that are more capable of challenging the likes of favourite Phil Taylor and reigning champion Adrian Lewis, who is priced at 12/1 to defend his title.

Wes Newton (33/1)

The world number six is a regular in the latter stages of most majors now, and has a chance of doing something over the next three weeks or so.

Newton is renowned for his clinical finishing, but in some recent TV events, he’s looked a little nervous. However, 33s is a great price for the ever-improving Lancastrian.

James Wade (16/1)

Under normal circumstances, the seven-time major winner would feature among the main contenders, but Wade has had a few struggles of late.

Despite that, he says he’s been practicing solely for the World Championship, and if he turns up, he should at least make the semi-finals.

Andy Hamilton (25/1)

Since reaching the final of the 2012 event, The Hammer has reached at least the quarter-finals of every major tournament bar the UK Open, and his consistency makes him worth a look.

He’s a good scorer and not averse to coming from behind to win games, which is a lethal combination.

Justin Pipe (40/1)

Known for his slow throwing, Pipe has gradually got used to playing on TV.

Currently ninth in the world rankings, the Taunton ace offers good value given that he’s in one of the more open sections of the draw.

Kim Huybrechts (25/1)

In less than two years, the 26-year-old Belgian has climbed into the world’s top 20, reached his first major final at the Players Championship Finals in Minehead and has become a player that many big names fear being drawn against.

His ability to play under pressure, though, is still questionable at times.

Robert Thornton (25/1)

The surprising winner of the UK Open, Thornton has played superbly for most of 2012.

Thornton has beaten Taylor, Newton and Gary Anderson on TV in the past few months, so he’s not going to be scared of anyone.
