Pepe Reina out and Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge in at Liverpool

The success of Liverpool’s January dealings have been somewhat mixed in recent seasons but, with the Reds’ squad threadbare and struggling for goals, they look set to dip their toe into the water once again.

January 2011 saw the arrival of Andy Carroll for a still incomprehensible £35 million, but it also saw Luis Suarez join the Anfield side for a comparatively cheap £22.8 million – and there can be little arguing that the Uruguayan has been an excellent buy.

It’s with the hope of finding another Suarez that Brendan Rodgers is entering the transfer window – and it looks as though Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge is the man he’s picked out to give his side more depth and goals.

According to the Evening Standard, Sturridge is determined to leave Stamford Bridge next month and has made Liverpool his number one choice of destination.

And the feeling is apparently reciprocated, with Rodgers thought to be willing to pay around £15 million for the 23-year-old, although his wage demands (rumoured to be around £80,000-per-week) may prove a sticking point.

Sturridge undoubtedly has potential but whether he’s the right man to fire them up the table is another matter altogether. The Reds are currently 13/2 alongside Merseyside rivals Everton to finish in the top four and it’s hard to see the signing of the England international helping those odds shorten significantly.

Meanwhile, there are also rumours about the future of Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina who could be on his way to make way for a younger man.

According to the Daily Mail, Rodgers is unsure about Reina and is looking to sign either Jack Butland or Germany’s Ron-Robert Zieler.

However, with Rodgers known to like his goalkeepers to be good footballers (something Reina certainly is), it’s hard to see him dispensing with the Spanaird’s services just yet.

Reina may have dropped a few clangers in recent seasons but, quite frankly, which goalkeeper hasn’t? It would be hugely surprising if he wasn’t still Liverpool’s number one at the start of next season.
