King of Stats: all of the numbers ahead of the King George VI Chase

Published:

Kauto Star’s five wins in the King George have slightly skewed the most recent statistics for the Boxing Day showcase at Kempton, but there is still some assistance that punters can profit from.

6 – All of the last six King George winners have been bred in France, alongside 16 of the 28 placed horses in the last ten years. There are five French-bred entrants still in the field this year, with Kauto Stone having solid appeal at 8/1.

8 – Only one eight-year-old has won the King George since 1996, which is a big minus against Riverside Theatre and Captain Chris this year. Captain Chris is 8/1 to triumph and improve on finishing third last year.

10 – The last five winners of the King George have been aged six, seven, eight, nine and 11. This potentially means a 10-year-old will come out on top this year, with Sizing Europe the only horse of this age. He is 12/1 to win the King George, but is by no means a certain starter.

8 – All of the last eight King George winners have come from the first two in the betting and there has not been a winner sent off at greater than 9/2 since 2002. This bodes well for favourite Long Run, who can be backed at 9/4.

6 – Six of the last seven King George winners ran in the Betfair Chase earlier in the same season. The Giant Bolster fits this criteria this year and is 14/1 to triumph at Kempton.

4 – The winner of the Ryanair Chase has run in the King George four times in the last decade and has not even managed to place. However, Riverside Theatre has won on four of his five career starts at Kempton and finished second in the other, he is 6/1 to win the King George.

3 – The three horses to attempt to win the King George having won the Haldon Gold Cup earlier in the season have all finished in the first three at worst. Cue Card is bidding to extend this positive record and is 4/1.

164 – In the last six years, eight horses have placed with an official rating of 164 or less. Grands Crus has course and distance winning form and is rated 157. He is 10/1 to triumph.
