Fulham v Southampton: Strugglers to scrap for leftovers

Published:

Southampton travel to Fulham looking for only their second away win of the season – and it’s tough to see the Saints soaring even against a side who are also finding wins hard to come by.

Fulham are the 4/6 favourites heading into this clash but, despite their very decent start to the season that saw them win three of their opening five games, they have been in a pretty dire run of form.

The Cottagers have won just one of their last 10 Premier League games (a 2-1 victory over an equally as hapless Newcastle United) and will find getting another three points a tough ask here.

They’ve shipped 11 goals in their last six league games in west London, including three against the hardly prolific Sunderland, and have won just two of them after winning all of their four prior to that.

Craven Cottage is still a tough place to go though and Fulham have the fourth best home attack in the division, averaging 1.88 goals-per-game.

With that in mind, backing Fulham to score over 2.5 goals against a side who has the worst Premier League away defence (they’ve conceded an average of 2.88 goals on the road this term) looks a decent bet at 9/4.

But beware! After starting their season in record-breakingly bad fashion, the Saints have shored up their defence and have kept two clean sheets in their last three away games.

They’ve also picked up wins against Reading, Newcastle and QPR in recent months to lengthen their relegation odds to 8/11.

They are currently on a decent run of form, despite defeat at home to Sunderland last time out, and were able to hold the Cottagers 2-2 at St Mary’s earlier in the season.

With that in mind, backing the draw at 12/5 is well worth consideration while a repeat of that 2-2 encounter is currently trading at 12/1.
