Man United back in for wantaway Inter Milan midfielder Sneijder

It’s a rumour that’s been doing the rounds for what seems like decades but, finally, it looks as though there’s a chance that Wesley Sneijder could be on his way to Manchester United.

Sir Alex Ferguson has been under mounting pressure in recent years to sign a world-class midfielder, with his reliance on veterans Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes becoming increasingly worrying for the Old Trafford faithful.

Sneijder has been in Fergie’s peripheries for a few years but a recent wage dispute has finally put him dead centre of his vision.

According to the Daily Mail, Sneijder is refusing to take a cut in his reported £200,000-per-week wages as Inter look to cut back their spending.

That’s opened the door for United to bag the 28-year-old – and it looks more likely than ever with the Manchester side showing with the signing of Robin van Persie that they aren’t afraid to spend big on slightly older players if they are deemed good enough.

Elsewhere, another apparent long-term target, Leighton Baines, could also be on his way to Old Trafford sooner rather than later.

There have been rumours in recent weeks that Ferguson was eyeing Ashley Cole for the left-back role, with Patrice Evra’s powers waning.

That appears to be dead in the water though, with United once again turning their attentions to Everton’s Baines who has once again been in excellent form for the Merseyside club.

The Manchester Evening News reckon Baines would end up costing United around £15 million.

Finally, in a rumour that appears to have come out of nowhere, the Sun believes that United could also be making a move for QPR attacker Adel Taarabt.

Quite what Ferguson would want with a player who has struggled to make the leap from the Championship to the Premier League remains unanswered though.

United are currently 11/20 favourites to win the Premier League following another come-from-behind win against Taarabt’s current club at the weekend.
