Liverpool and Stoke target Lazio striker Mauro Zarate

Liverpool and Stoke are set for a January battle to land out-of favour Lazio striker Mauro Zarate – with both sides desperate for options up top.

According to the Metro, the Reds and the Potters are both eyeing the forward who is thought to be available for less than £10 million, thanks to the 25-year-old having played just five times in Serie A this term.

However, whether he is the man to fire the Reds up the table remains to be seen. He hit just two goals in 22 league games for Inter Milan and during his brief spell in England with Birmingham in 2007/08, he bagged a fairly meagre four goals in 14 appearances.

It’s hardly a signing that would set Liverpool hearts racing, but with Brendan Rodgers severely lacking in attacking options, surely any signing is better than none?

The Reds were once again far from their best against Swansea City at the weekend, with the Merseyside club being forced to make do with a point.

They had several decent chances throughout the game but rarely was the Swans’ stand-in goalkeeper Gerhard Tremmel really troubled in their goalless draw – even the in-form Luis Suarez struggled to replicate his recent stellar performances.

Meanwhile, Stoke are also in need of striking options with Michael Owen’s injury woes continuing and the Potters having the fourth worst attacking record in the division.

They have averaged less than one goal per game at home and away this season and have failed to score in 38 per cent of their Premier League games.
