Groupie Doll shorter price for Breeders’ Cup than Excelebration
Punters looking for the most guaranteed winner over the two days of the Breeders’ Cup should look no further than Groupie Doll in the Fillies and Mares’ Sprint if the betting is anything to go by.
Groupie Doll has been utterly dominant since connections decided to fit her with blinkers, winning all four races by a combined distance of a little more than 20 lengths.
This has seen her installed as the 1/1 favourite and there is potentially the chance that she will touch odds-on come race day.
Three of her four victories have come over the Fillies and Mares’ Sprint distance of 7f and two have been in Group One company.
Meanwhile, trainer Buff Bradley is more than content with the draw, as his wish of a stall between six and 10 came true when Groupie Doll was positioned in stall nine, allowing her to settle in behind the early pace.
Arguably the only doubt is how well she will take to the Santa Anita track, but these concerns were largely quelled when she did a routine gallop of about 4f as part of her final preparations.
She cantered all over some useful opposition without really breaking sweat, looking supremely at ease in the process.
The absence of Contested among the final declarations is a bit of a disappointment as she has won both career starts at Santa Anita, but some talented opposition do remain.
Last year’s winner Musical Romance is among them, although she has already been comprehensively beaten by Groupie Doll this season.
Former Santa Anita Oaks winner Turbulent Descent is another previous Group One victor, alongside Switch and Teddy’s Promise, while it would be foolish to completely rule out Dust and Diamonds after recording a three-race unbeaten streak.
