Benitez and Redknapp touted after insane Di Matteo Chelsea sacking

Published:

It seems the ultimate knee jerk reaction and complete insanity that Roberto Di Matteo has been sacked as Chelsea manager and it is Rafa Benitez that is odds-on to replace him at 8/13.

Eight months now seems the standard length of time for a Chelsea boss in the current day and age, as Di Matteo’s tenure lasted not even a week longer than predecessor Andre Villas-Boas.

Bettering Di Matteo’s record of a Champions League and FA Cup double in such a short space of time will take some doing and it now means that of the three Premier League clubs to win trophies last season, two have now opted to change managers.

This suggests that trophies actually now mean very little, which will suit Benitez down to the ground given his recent record.

His spell at Inter was largely disastrous, while in six years at Liverpool he managed a single FA Cup and Champions League, both towards the start of his spell.

The speculation is that he is the latest to be targeted in a short-term deal, with the aim being that he will take charge until the end of the season, no doubt when Pep Guardiola will be refreshed enough to return from his break.

Guardiola seems an integral man of his word and therefore it would be a surprise if he returned to the dugout yet, although he is 6/4 to replace Di Matteo.

It has to be assumed that Roman Abramovich already has a replacement lined up given the speed of the decision and Harry Redknapp is another one available to start straight away.

Managing in London would suit Redknapp from his home in Sandbanks and he must enter calculations at 8/1.
