Sea Moon among Arc flops to seek recompense in Breeders’ Cup Turf

Sea Moon was just one of the runners inconvenienced by the heavy ground at Longchamp in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, but he is capable of compensating connections and punters in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

Sir Michael Stoute’s runner plugged on to finish eighth in the Arc in conditions too demanding for his preference and is 6/1 to make amends in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

In total, three Arc failures may head to Santa Anita to attempt to make amends with St Nicholas Abbey expected to return to defend his Breeders Cup Turf title and Meandre also making the trip across the Atlantic Ocean.

The Turf is the one race at the Breeders’ Cup meeting that tends to be dominated by European entrants, as they are responsible for 10 of the 13 winners since 2000.

Therefore, it is a bit of a surprise that home hope Point Of Entry is the ante-post 3/1 favourite.

The 1m4f distance of the Turf is not a common one raced over by US horses, although Point Of Entry is unbeaten on his four career starts and three of them have been over this trip.

What is worth noting is that the latest of these was a success over former Epsom Derby runner-up Treasure Beach, but Aidan O’Brien’s runner has been below par for much of the season.

Therefore, this form may not actually equate to much.

St Nicholas Abbey is 5/1 to win his second Breeders’ Cup Turf in a row, with Meandre at 8/1.

However, the fact that Sea Moon will be more experienced than last year now that he is a four-year-old is a positive, as this has been the age of each of the last three winners.

Furthermore, Sea Moon was slow out of the starting stalls in the Turf last year and this could have hindered his chances as Ryan Moore perhaps rushed a little to make up lost ground.
