Davids 200/1 to do the unthinkable and guide Barnet to promotion

Published:

Barnet may already be five points adrift at the foot of League Two after 11 games, but the coup of landing Edgar Davids on a player-coach deal should see them climb the standings in no time.

It is currently 2/5 that Barnet are relegated into non-league this season and things were looking bleak, as they have only picked up three points so far and are still awaiting their first victory.

However, a player of Davids’ calibre arriving at the club will have an instant impact on morale, given his three Serie A titles and three Dutch championships, alongside 74 international caps.

He has not played competitively since a stint at Crystal Palace and so it may take a few weeks before his fitness is of a level that will see him return to action.

Now a 39-year-old, Davids will not have the same energy and bustling mentality that was a key feature of his game in his prime, but his ability to read the game, maintain possession and dictate tempo will be valuable.

Some punters may even want to consider the 200/1 that Barnet are promoted this season and it is not totally out of the question that they can make up their present 15-point deficit on the League Two play-off places.

Crystal Palace were in the drop zone in the Championship in 2003/04 season in early December, before embarking on a fine late-season run to break into the play-offs.

Meanwhile, Davids may even be able to use his vast number of contacts to bring some other talent to Underhill before the closing of the January transfer window, with the chance to live in London sure to tempt some other veterans from the past.

Above is a clip of Davids strutting his stuff in his prime which will offer Barnet fans some insight into some of the skills the Dutchman will bring to the table.

Also, keep an eye out at about 90 seconds in to see a brilliant save from current Spurs outcast Heurelho Gomes.
