Bookies salute 10,169/1 Hughes 7-timer on wonderful day for punters

Bookies were licking their wounds as top jockey Richard Hughes completed an astonishing 10,169/1 seven-timer at Windsor on a day of misery for the betting industry, according to Ladbrokes.

The champion jockey-elect lit up the afternoon racing and is the toast of betting shop punters who were celebrating an exceptional feat.

One Ladbrokes shop customer scooped £159,430.39 with a series of multiple bets on Hughes’ first six winners on the card.

David Williams of Ladbrokes said: “It was very nearly a total wipe-out. We had some respite in the sixth when David Probert intervened but it felt like we were putting a plaster on an open wound.

“When the smoke finally clears we’ll probably find that we’ve done our brains.

“We sponsored most of the races on the Windsor card and once we’ve finished paying out and gritting our teeth we’ll probably look back on a fantastic day for racing punters. We might even take the pressure off our trading team and charge the losses to our marketing team.”

Ladbrokes have paid out on Richard Hughes to be champion jockey with less than a month of the 2012 Flat season to go.
