US Open accumulator: Federer to leave Fish floundering
Published:Roger Federer has been near flawless in reaching the fourth round of the US Open and he can continue his serene progress by dumping out home hope Mardy Fish.
However, with Federer a short 1/16 to simply triumph, we believe he can progress in straight sets at 2/5 to begin a 9/1 four-player accumulator.
Federer is yet to drop a set so far this year at Flushing Meadow, dropping no more than four games in a single set.
Fish should present a slightly stiffer challenge and is capable of reaching a tie-break, but Federer has been almost consistently in the groove since Wimbledon and assuming he starts in the same manner, he can progress 3-0.
Our other men’s pick is surprise package Martin Klizan, who has already upset French duo Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Jeremy Chardy to reach round four.
He faces Marin Cilic next and the Croatian has already needed 14 sets to win his three matches so far and therefore the hot conditions must begin to take their toll soon.
Klizan has also only lost once in ten matches since the Olympics and so is in the middle of a bit of a hot streak.
In the women’s draw, Tsvetana Pironkova may have progressed in her only previous encounter with Ana Ivanovic, but she is not as formidable on hard courts, where her game based around spin is not as much of a weapon.
Ivanovic has found a new form of aggression and this should see her into the quarter finals.
Finally, Angelique Kerber can secure some Grand Slam revenge on Sara Errani, after losing to the Italian in the quarter finals of the French Open earlier this year.
Kerber’s game is more suited to hard courts than clay and her powerful winners can prove too much for Errani, as Petra Kvitova and Venus Williams have already shown on a hard surface in recent weeks.
