Tottenham v Lazio: Lloris debut to arrive with win to nil

Published:

Lazio have begun the season with a 100 per cent winning record in competitive matches, but the Spurs debut of Hugo Lloris can ensure that this streak is ended.

Tottenham head into the Group J opener as the 17/20 favourites in the Europa League odds and this will be first game in the competition for manager Andre Villas-Boas since guiding Porto to the trophy.

He is expected to name a strong starting line-up, with Lloris predicted to make his debut following his deadline-day move from Lyon.

And history suggests that 9/4 is a fair price that he keeps a clean sheet in a Tottenham victory.

Spurs have never lost a home game with Italian opposition, while Lazio have failed to win any of their last seven visits to England.

Meanwhile, they have failed to trouble the scorers in either of their last two fixtures with Premier League clubs and it is 13/8 that Tottenham secure a first clean sheet of the campaign.

Tottenham will have gained a confidence boost from their latest win over Reading, their first of the season, but it is hard to see why they are odds-on for victory given the current form of Lazio.

The Italians have opened the Serie A season with three straight victories and manager Vladimir Petkovic has vowed to stick with the same team to maintain continuity as his squad will not be too fatigued this early into the campaign.

Hernanes has been particularly impressive in pulling the strings from midfield and some punters will believe they are a value bet for victory at White Hart Lane at 10/3.

The big obstacle for Lazio is to avoid getting swamped in midfield and allowing Tottenham to play at a high tempo that far exceeds that typically witnessed in Italy.
