Thought Worthy to follow in sibling’s footsteps in St Leger

Thought Worthy’s season has a lot in common of that of his brother Lucarno in 2007 and if things are to remain the same, he will beat Camelot and win the St Leger.

Amazingly, Lucarno finished fourth in the Epsom Derby behind Authorized before improving throughout the season to take the Great Voltigeur at York and then going on to claim victory in the St Leger.

Thought Worthy heads to Doncaster with an identical record in the first two of these contests, finishing 11 lengths behind Camelot at Epsom at a similar price to Lucarno.

He arguably went for home too early in the Derby before fading and William Buick got his tactics much better in the Great Voltigeur, when leading all of the way.

Thought Worthy is 10/1 to win the St Leger at present and trainer John Gosden believes that even though he prevailed, the way the Great Voltigeur panned out was not ideal for his horse either.

At York he was allowed an easy lead and kept the early pace slow, before stealing a lead entering the home straight which was never overhauled.

Gosden feels a more even gallop would be appreciated in the St Leger and with the trainer also running Michelangelo and no-hoper Dartford, the latter is expected to fulfil pace-making duties.

Camelot is the 1/3 favourite and although Gosden knows he will be exceedingly tough to beat, the step into the unknown for the extra 2f of the 1m6f contest may find him out.

Gosden knows what it takes to prepare a St Leger winner as he has been responsible for the past two victors in Arctic Cosmos and Masked Marvel 12 months ago.
