Steady starting Leeds United generously priced for promotion

Published:

Leeds head into the international break with seven points from 12 but four solid showings could prove a price of 7/2 for them to achieve promotion to be a shrewd investment.

The early signs suggest that this season’s Championship will be as competitive as ever with just three points separating the top 14 sides in the league after four games.

Experience often plays a pivotal role in the race to get out of this notoriously tough league and, if the first four games are anything to go by, this could have an especially important role this time around.

Neil Warnock fares well in this department having achieved two promotions from the second-tier of English football, taking his tally to seven in total including his lower league exploits.

In addition to his own familiarity with achieving promotion, Warnock has also recruited Championship veterans such as Paddy Kenny, David Norris and Luke Varney who share three promotions between them.

Having a striker who can find the back of the net is the most important ingredient for success at any level and, in Luciano Becchio, they definitely have that.

The Argentine front man has netted four goals in as many league games this term and if he can steer clear of injury, Leeds will be in amongst the chasing pack come the end of the season.

Historically, Leeds should be encouraged by their current points tally after reaching the first international break of the season.

Usually the Football League is one more game further on at this time of year, yet, in each of the last four seasons teams with equivalent or fewer points than Leeds’ current total have gone on to achieve promotion, two of them – Reading and Norwich – in the automatic spots.

The West Yorkshire club should be content with their current standing, as well as their performances that have led them to this position, most notably against Blackburn last time out.

Coming back from two goals down to be within a minute of victory against the title favourites suggests they have the strength of character required for success in the Championship.
