Southampton, Reading and Stoke linked with teenage non-league star

Bournemouth have made the first move in what could be a long chase of non-league footballer Harry Cornick, with three Premier League clubs also making enquiries.

Cornick currently plays for Sydenhams Premier Division team Christchurch and has been impressing a host of scouts locally with his performances.

Bournemouth have already invited the 17-year-old to join up with their developmental academy and this would logically appear a wise move as this would seemingly offer him the best chance of first-team action.

However, Reading, Stoke and Southampton have been in touch with Christchurch and there would be the obvious temptation of joining the books of a Premier League club.

Cornick would have already seen the likes of Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale emerge from the Southampton academy in recent years and this may enhance his chances of picking St Mary’s.

Meanwhile, joining the Saints may also allow him to remain in his current home in Dorset.

However, for now, Cornick is prepared to take his time to consider all of the interest, especially as he still wants to continue his studies.

The fact he is unpaid and not on a contract at present makes life potentially tough for Christchurch as their brightest star would leave for nothing, but manager Graham Kemp is hoping the club can benefit from any deal that is concluded.

He said: “We would like to get a friendly out of whatever happens – if he decides to move on – as well as some recognition and, maybe, a small donation towards our new changing rooms.”

Cornick can operate either as a winger or striker and one of the three Premier League clubs being relegated would enhance his chances of breaking through in the future.

Southampton are currently the only club odds-on for the drop at 5/6, with Reading 21/10 to be relegated and Stoke 11/2 after their unbeaten start through three games.
