Snedeker’s putting makes him big dark horse at Tour Championship

Published:

Brandt Snedeker knows he is guaranteed to win the FedEx Cup with victory at the Tour Championship and based on his putting alone he must be given a high chance of success.

Despite the consistent high finishes of Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods and Dustin Johnson in particular in recent weeks, it is still somewhat of a surprise to see a player with Snedeker’s talents on the greens to be as high as 40/1 in the Tour Championship betting.

Putting has proved a critical aspect in this tournament in recent years, with three of the last four winners leading this field in this particular department across the 72 holes.

There has arguably been no better putter this season than Snedeker, who leads the PGA Tour statistics in terms of the number of strokes he has gained through putting.

More of a premium has been placed on putting at East Lake since its architect decided to change the type of grass on the greens, affecting the way a ball rolls and generally making them faster.

He only finished in a share of 16th in the Tour Championship 12 months ago, but discard one disappointing round and he would have been bang in contention.

Snedeker also has the greatest incentive for victory as he is one of only five players who know that a triumph will confirm them as the FedEx Cup champion, something which would net him $10m.

The fact that Snedeker will also want to remind Davis Love III of his Ryder Cup credentials should be an extra spur towards a strong finish, while he has already secured top-ten finishes in two of the three FedEx Cup playoff events.

Furthermore, after a busy schedule for much of the PGA Tour season, he is likely to have appreciated the last week off more than anybody else.
