Quick off the mark Tranmere dark horses for League One promotion

Tranmere haven’t hung about getting out of the blocks in League One and sit top after four games.

They can be backed at 7/1 to follow up their excellent start by clinching promotion and, if they can maintain their phenomenal home form, it’s not at all impossible.

With two wins from two at Prenton Park, scoring seven and conceding one, Rovers have picked up where they left off last year. The Tranmere faithful haven’t seen a team take three points back from the Wirral since early-December 2011.

Their unbeaten start also indicates that they’ve gone some way to improving on last season’s unwanted away record. They surrendered 15 defeats on the road which neutralised any hopes of the promotion push their home form warranted and left them languishing in 12th place.

Two away games have seen them demolish Carlisle to the tune of three goals to nil and earned a credible point at newly promoted Shrewsbury so far this term; signs that they’ve worked out last season’s kinks.

If they can uphold this form throughout September then this long price will have reduced by a sizeable deficit.

Home games with slow-starting Coventry and Bury are included in their upcoming fixtures, as well as winnable trips to Crewe and Brentford so they shouldn’t be viewing this as an impossible task.

Jake Cassidy, an 18-year-old striker on loan from Wolves, could be a valuable source of goals having netted five in 10 games in his first spell with Rovers last season.

He put Colchester to the sword last time out when he smashed in a first half hat-trick and looks like he could have a bigger role to play within the squad in his second League One stint.

An encouraging sign from last season’s League One for Tranmere fans is that, of the three promoted clubs, two of them were undefeated after last four games and were able to build on that throughout the campaign.

Those clubs – Charlton and Huddersfield – admittedly, had greater quality in reserve than what Rovers can boast but, a side as strong as they are at home have to be considered potential promotion material and such a long price could at this stage could pay dividends at the end of the year.
