Win looks a big ask for Woods at the PGA Championship

Tiger Woods may be due a 15th career major success, but even though he is the favourite at 9/1 in the golf odds to win the PGA Championship this year, there are doubts over whether he can prosper on the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island.

Woods finally got his act together in the final round of the Bridgestone Invitational when a final-round bogey-free 66 helped him finish in a share of eighth and he can take confidence from this close at Firestone Country Club.

Further good news for Woods is that on the PGA Tour in 2012 he has experienced three victories, a second, a third and an additional six top-ten finishes.

Meanwhile, on the whole his record in the PGA Championship is strong, with four victories and three other top-five outcomes.

However, his major form this year has largely been disappointing despite finishing third at the Open Championship, while he has not challenged in the last two instalments of the PGA Championship, missing the cut last year.

One of the big problems for Woods of late has come in his short game, as he averaged over 30 putts per round at Firestone, while in general his play from 150 yards or shorter has been mediocre.

The fact that the greens may be sticky in South Carolina will not help his case, while the use of the thicker Paspalum grass could cause further difficulty.

Taking everything into consideration, the best bet for Woods may prove the 4/7 that he finishes in the top ten at the PGA Championship.

After all, Woods does top the PGA Tour statistics this season for adjusted scoring and fourth in the standings for ball striking.
