US Open accumulator: Kerber can see off Venus to lead eight picks

Published:

Angelique Kerber is our pick to win the women’s US Open tennis from here and so it is only right that we expect her to beat Venus Williams in the second round.

Kerber is one of eight picks we have made for today’s action, with 26/1 the price that they are all successful.

The German beat Williams in two tie-breaks in the recent Olympics and this was on a surface that should have favoured the American.

Based on previous results, Kerber is best on hard courts and so can ensure that there is no twilight visit to Flushing Meadows for Williams, even if she did show signs of her previous devastating best against Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the opening round.

Elsewhere in the women’s draw, both Roberta Vinci and Yaroslava Shvedova were successful for us in their first round matches and we are siding with Vinci in the second round.

The Italian won the US Open warm-up event in Dallas and dropped just two games in beating Urszula Radwanska in the first round.

Kiki Bertens has already knocked Olga Puchkova out of the French Open this season and can secure another Grand Slam success over the Russian, while Andrea Hlavackova’s strong run in Cincinnati means she is marginally preferred to Galina Voskoboeva.

Tsvetana Pironkova has won her two career encounters with Ayumi Morita and can extend this run to three.

Over to the men and Mardy Fish can give the home support reason to celebrate by beating Nikolay Davydenko.

Fish has triumphed in the last two hard-court meetings between the pair and has shown signs in recent weeks of rediscovering his better form of last year.

Jeremy Chardy displayed his hard-court pedigree when beating Andy Murray in Cincinnati can progress past Matthew Ebden, while Marcel Granollers can make his superior position of 90 places in the ATP rankings count against James Blake.
