Brazilian playmaker Willian set to join Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur are hoping to finalise their £20m move for Shakhtar Donetsk attacker Willian in the coming days.

With long odds of 40/1 to win the Premier League this season, the Brazilian may not be joining title challengers but he could help them grab a place in the top four.

With Luka Modric seemingly on his way out of the Spurs exit door to Real Madrid, Willian would be a ready-made replacement for the Croatian.

The 24-year-old is a long-term Premier League target, with reports suggesting both Arsenal and Chelsea have been interested in securing his services.

Arsene Wenger identified Shakhtar’s number 10 as the man to fill Cesc Fabregas’ hole in North London last summer, before moving for Everton’s Mikel Arteta.

And Chelsea are thought to have bid for Willian in January, with the Brazilian international keen to secure a move to England.

However, it seems that Andre Villas-Boas has stolen a march on his rivals by moving to add to his swelling forward ranks at White Hart Lane.

Spurs striker Jermain Defoe was the only experienced marksman in the squad for the club’s defeat at Newcastle, but reinforcements have arrived.

Former Gunner Emmanuel Adebayor scored 18 goals for Tottenham last season, and has finally completed his £5m switch from Man City.

Boss AVB appears to be happy with his forward options, which include rookie England U-19 star Harry Kane.

“With Adebayor, Defoe and Kane coming through I have enough options, but in football you just never know,” said the Portuguese.

Rumours continue to suggest that Willian’s compatriot Leandro Damiao is set to join the growing number of Brazilians in North London.

The number nine shirt at the club remains vacant, and the Olympic top scorer with six goals impressed on these shores earlier this summer.

Spurs could prove quite a force to be reckoned with if Villas-Boas can secure the signatures of these two Samba stars before the transfer window shuts.
