Sergio Garcia closing in on Barclays success in New York

Sergio Garcia goes into the final round of the Barclays competition in New York as the odds-on favourite after moving two shots clear of American Nick Watney.

The 32-year-old is 8/11 to add another trophy to the Wyndham Championship he picked up in North Carolina last week.

Having confirmed his place on Europe’s Ryder Cup team for next month, Garcia’s putting has markedly improved his game and he is -10 after three rounds of the Bethpage Black Course.

Those who backed the Spanish swinger at 25/1 before the tournament started will be feeling smug right now, while Garcia was still priced at 4/1 before the third round.

And the Barclays now looks like his to lose, while Watney will remain hopeful of having a say in proceedings only two shots off the lead and found at 7/2.

The Americans have dominated this competition in recent years, with only three overseas winners since 1998 separating consistent home success.

And US golfers Kevin Stadler and Brandt Snedeker will be hoping to capitalise on any slip ups from the leaders as they tee off in pursuit of national pride on the final day’s play.

Stadler produced the third round’s best score of -6 to take him within three shots of Garcia, and his price to win at 20/1 could be worthy is he can continue his rich vein of form.

Snedeker has more pedigree than his Nevada counterpart, and despite being a shot back from Stadler on -6, the 31-year-old is shorter odds of 14/1 to top the leaderboard.

Tiger Woods dropped off the pace after a promising start at the Barclays, and is now a 25/1 outsider to secure victory from his three rounds total of -4.
