Olympic gold medalist Bradley Wiggins odds-on to be knighted

Bradley Wiggins is guaranteed to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award this year according to Ladbrokes.

The bookies have paid out early on all bets struck on Wiggins following his sensational Olympic time trial win.

Wiggins was already odds-on at 4/9 for the gong after his Tour de France victory in Paris but his gold medal in the men’s time trial – a victory that makes him the most medaled British athlete in Olympic history – has made him a dead cert.

Such is the incredible success that he has enjoyed in recent weeks that he is also now in at 1/2 to be knighted in the 2013 New Year’s Honours.

Chris Hoy followed up his three gold medals in the Beijing Olympics with a knighthood and there is every reason to think Wiggins will follow suit.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “Wiggins is now a certainty for SPOTY. We can’t see anyone getting close so we’ve saved time and paid out.”

He added: “With one gong in the bag already knighthood is surely on the horizon.”
