Michael Owen interesting Everton and Stoke City

Published:

Everton and Stoke City appear to be the likely destinations for former Manchester United striker Michael Owen as he hunts down a Premier League return.

As a boyhood Toffees fan, the 32-year-old might prefer a move to Goodison Park, and his goals could help David Moyes’ side break back into the Premier League top six at 15/8.

However, Owen could be snared by Stoke City who are also interested in the finisher, and a potential little-and-large partnership with Peter Crouch looks tempting for both parties.

The ex-Liverpool star insists he is not short of options as he bids to return to England’s top flight this season, saying: “I’ve been in contact with quite a few teams and I expect to be donning a new shirt soon.”

Despite obtaining a reputation for spending more time on the treatment table than the pitch, Owen has scored goals at Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle United and Man Utd.

From picking up back-to-back Premier League golden boots on Merseyside earlier in his career, the Chester-born poacher has managed nearly one goal every two games during his career.

Since breaking onto the scene at the 1998 World Cup, Owen’s playing days have not quite lived up to the promise his electric start suggested, but he remains a proven goalscorer in the division.

Everton have begun this season with an 100% record, defeating both Owen’s former club Man Utd and Aston Villa, and look set for a successful campaign.

David Moyes’ squad appears well-stocked for strikers, with Nikica Jelavic, Steven Naismith, Kevin Miralles, Victor Anichebe, Magaye Gueye and Apostolos Vellios in his ranks.

And with Stoke boss Tony Pulis remarking after the 0-0 draw with Arsenal that he would like to bring some new faces to the club, Owen may be set for a move to the Britannia Stadium.
