Liverpool ready to sell to generate funds for Chelsea strike star

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers still hopes to add to his Liverpool squad this summer, and, as such, is ready to allow certain first-teamers to leave.

Rodgers is keen to bring in Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge, who would command a fee of around £15m if he was to leave the European champions.

Sturridge could welcome the opportunity to move though, having repeatedly outlined his frustrations at being used in a wide role at Stamford Bridge.

If he is to make the move to Anfield, Rodgers will need to oversee the departure of some first-team squad members, in order to generate adequate transfer funds.

The former Swansea boss is willing to let both Charlie Adam and Stewart Downing go, after each had less than stellar campaigns on Merseyside last term.

Andy Carroll is also a potential outgoing, with his physical playing style not thought to lend itself to Rodgers’ ethos regarding the way he wants his team to play.

West Ham and Newcastle have shown an interest in Carroll, whilst the former club is also keen to reunite with Joe Cole, who still collects a hefty salary at Anfield.

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen how Liverpool’s interest in Sturridge will be received by Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo, given how light his current attacking options are.

Indeed, the Blues have allowed Romelu Lukaku to join West Brom on loan for the season, meaning Sturridge is the club’s only senior striker apart from Fernando Torres.

However, he has been utilised sparingly so far this season, featuring only as a substitute in the Stamford Bridge outfit’s opening three games.

With long-standing interest in several forwards too, Sturridge could descend further down the pecking order, should a move for any potential targets come to fruition.

Edinson Cavani and Andre Schurrle are amongst those thought to be nearing a move to London, whilst a deal for Porto forward Hulk is still not out of the question.

Should Chelsea tie up a deal for any of the aforementioned targets, Liverpool’s hopes of landing Sturridge would be significantly bolstered.
