Johnson best suited to demands of PGA Championship course

Published:

There are not many players who deserve a major victory any more than Dustin Johnson and the American looks to have a lot going for him at this year’s PGA Championship, where he can be backed at 25/1 to triumph.

Johnson arguably should have won two majors in 2010, first when blowing a three-shot lead at the US Open and then when collecting a two-shot penalty for grounding his club in a bunker at the PGA Championship when one-stroke ahead entering the final hole.

However, it was his second-placed result at last year’s Open Championship that perhaps provides the best guide to why Johnson is a serious threat at Kiawah Island.

The Ocean Course in South Carolina is as close to a links environment that can be found in the US and this suggests that Open Championship form is worth considering.

Johnson followed up by taking ninth this year at Royal Lytham and St Annes to show that his game is well suited to the demands of links golf.

Also well suited to Johnson is courses of length and this is the longest course in major championship history at 7,676 yards.

Johnson can certainly smash it with the best of them off the tee and much will come down to his accuracy in this department, as he can sometimes be erratic.

The final area where Johnson should have an advantage comes in terms of his local knowledge, as he played collegiately in Carolina.

Therefore, he will understand the impact that the wind will have off the Atlantic coast.

Alternatively, punters may prefer the 5/1 that Johnson finishes within the top five in the PGA Championship, while it is 5/2 that he secures a top-ten result
