Hammerfest to land bigger blow than Motivado in the Ebor

Published:

Motivado has a clear favourite’s chance of winning the Ebor Handicap at York but the dismal record of market leaders in recent years may make Hammerfest a better each-way proposition at 8/1.

It was hard not to be impressed with the way Motivado surged clear at Goodwood last time over the Ebor trip of 1m6f and a rise of 4lb in the handicap seems somewhat lenient given the dominance of the triumph.

The son of former Epsom Derby winner Motivator can be backed at 7/2 to follow up and this seems solid value given that he is against opposition that are largely in the handicapper’s grip.

However, the favourite has won just one of the last ten runnings of the Ebor and this is a slight negative to his cause.

Camborne comes next in the betting and showed a good turn of foot to land a handicap at Royal Ascot last time.

But this victory was over 1m4f and whether he can retain the same speed over an extra 2f remains to be seen.

What is also notable is that he is 6lb worse off for the Ebor than Royal Ascot runner-up Hammerfest.

Hammerfest arguably travelled the strongest throughout the race until asked for a final effort and this extra 2f should put less pressure on finishing speed.

He must have place claims at worst and is certainly fancied to reverse form with Camborne.

It may also pay to follow Harrison’s Cave from the Aidan O’Brien yard, who finished third at Royal Ascot and has seemingly been laid out for this.

He is another better off at the weights with Camborne and looks overpriced at 16/1 to triumph for the first time in 11 months in the Ebor.
