Further coveted attacking additions expected at Chelsea
Published:Chelsea are already the Premier League’s biggest spending club this summer, but that hasn’t deterred them from attempting to further strengthen their squad.
The Blues’ signings of Eden Hazard and Oscar in particular represented huge investments, but owner Roman Abramovich seems willing to further back his manager in the transfer market.
As a result, Roberto Di Matteo is hopeful of bringing in both Edinson Cavani and Andre Schurrle, from Napoli and Bayer Leverkusen respectively.
Cavani, long touted as a potential replacement for Didier Drogba, caught the eye last term when scoring Champions League goals in either leg of Napoli’s clash with eventual champions Chelsea.
The powerful Uruguayan striker is also thought to be high on Manchester City’s wishlist, but a firm £35m offer could put Chelsea in pole position to land the forward.
It is also believed that Cavani would also prefer a move to the London area, and he could become a Stamford Bridge player before the end of the week.
However, should the switch fail to materialise, Di Matteo is reportedly willing to turn his attentions back to long-term target Hulk, whom Porto want £45m for.
Another target meanwhile is Andre Schurrle, who enjoyed an impressive Euro 2012 campaign with Germany when afforded the chance to play this summer.
Schurrle’s ability to operate either as a striker or a winger is appealing to Di Matteo, whose tactical system would offer a number of positions the German could adequately fulfil.
The 21-year-old is a key figure at his current club Bayer Leverkusen, but a £23.5m bid may be enough to persuade the Bundesliga outfit to do business.
A move to the current European champions would likely be welcomed by Schurrle too, as he aims to win a regular starting berth in the German national side.
With four caps and two goals to his name at such a tender age already, the attacker could be nurtured into a leading world talent in England.
