Five more medal opportunities for Team GB on final day of Olympics
Published:London 2012 is hours away from conclusion, however there is still time for the hosts to produce a golden finish with two more Great Britain medals guaranteed in the boxing and a major domestic contender in the women’s modern pentathlon.
Great Britain enter the final day with 28 golds, 15 silvers and 19 bronze medals, a tally soaring past even the more upbeat forecasts, and it isn’t unthinkable that by the time the closing ceremony begins, the gold count will have reached 30.
The most fancied of Sunday’s hopefuls is men’s boxer Anthony Joshua, who was favourite to triumph in the super-heavyweight division from the outset and is 2/5 to overcome Italy’s Roberto Cammarelle, who took the title in Beijing.
European Welterweight champion Freddie Evans is also certain of at least a silver following his semi-final victory over Taras Shelestyuk, however he enters his bout with Serik Sapiyev as a 6/4 outsider.
Optimism can be gleaned from the fact that his rival in the last round had beaten Sapiyev in a high-profile fight before, prevailing 16-10 at last autumn’s World Amateur Boxing Championships in Baku.
Great Britain are the only nation to have landed two boxing golds so far, via men’s bantamweight winner Luke Campbell and women’s flyweight queen Nicola Adams, with the countries of their opponents, Italy and Kazakhstan, yet to get off the mark.
Outside of boxing, Mhairi Spence is one of the leading candidates to finish first in the women’s modern pentathlon, which is already underway. She made a decent but unremarkable start, ranking in joint 11th after winning 19 of 35 fencing contests.
The other two British medal chasers on day 16 are outsiders, with Liam Killeen 25/1 to deliver more cycling success in the men’s cross-country and Scott Overall 100/1 to clock the fastest time in the men’s marathon.
