Europa League victory adds doubt to future of Liverpool trio

Daniel Agger may have reportedly missed Liverpool’s Europa League victory over FC Gomel because of a shortage of fitness, but comments from his agent suggests that this may have indeed been a lie.

Agger has been the focus of transfer speculation in recent days, with Premier League champions Manchester City and Barcelona believed to be the clubs interested in his signature.

Therefore, there would have been the feelings from some that Agger was instead being held back to maximise his selling price, rather than because of injury concerns.

And his agent Per Steffensen has since stated that although Agger has not handed in a transfer request, “he is not injured in any way and so only the club and the manager can answer to why he was not in the squad”.

Not only would there have been the risk of injury if the Danish defender participated in the 1-0 victory in the first leg of the third-round qualifier, but it would have also made him cup-tied for other European clubs this season.

Therefore, the likes of Barcelona and Manchester City would have been unable to include Agger in their respective European squads if they were to sign him.

This is also the probable reason why two other Liverpool players missed the trip to Belarus as they look other squad members closing in on a move away from Anfield.

England striker Andy Carroll has been heavily linked with loan moves to former club Newcastle and West Ham and Liverpool will not want to jeopardise a sale where they could make close to £20m with an injury.

The final player is Alberto Aquilani, but it remains to be seen to which Italian club he will join.

Fiorentina are the latest to show an interest and reports abroad are indicating that a three-year deal has already been sealed between the two parties.

Liverpool are expected to be contenders to finish in the top four in the Premier League this season and it is 19/10 that this feat is accomplished.
