Ennis threatens to cause double payout with Wiggins for SPOTY
Bradley Wiggins was so certain to pocket the Sports Personality of the Year award that Ladbrokes decided to pay out on this success in August, but Jess Ennis’ victory could result in punters potentially profiting on two winners.
If another sports star does beat Wiggins to the SPOTY gong, Ladbrokes would be paying out twice and Ennis must be considered as a value bet at 4/1 to cause an upset.
It is hard to question Wiggins’ credentials, as not only was he the first British cyclist to ever win the Tour De France this year, he followed up by becoming Britain’s most decorated ever Olympian when taking gold in the time trial.
He has now won seven Olympic medals and throw in that Chris Hoy and Mark Cavendish have claimed SPOTY honours in the last four years, then it appears that Wiggins should have it in the bag.
However, Ryan Giggs won in 2009 arguably when there were better candidates and upsets can happen.
Ennis may have only won one gold in the heptathlon, but as the face of the Olympics, she is clearly liked.
Meanwhile, of all of the golds so far at the Olympics, Ennis’ seems to have received the most coverage.
Furthermore, her standing within Britain was shown when she received an MBE, despite having never really done anything outstanding in terms of holding British records or gaining an Olympic gold.
As SPOTY is as much a likeability contest as one about achievement, it would be no surprise to see Ennis stand atop the podium again, despite Wiggins’ achievements.
Mo Farah may also come into the reckoning as a challenger if adding the 5,000m success to his 10,000m gold, alongside Andy Murray if he triumphs in the US Open.
