Capital One Cup Accumulator: Bluebirds to breeze through

Published:

Cardiff City, beaten Capital One Cup finalists last term, head our 69/1 fourfold accumulator as they make the trip to Northampton in their opening round fixture.

At 5/6 the Bluebirds look a great price to win at Sixfields, especially when you consider that they have not been dumped out of either domestic cup competition by lower league opposition since 2006.

Their Championship curtain-raiser against Huddersfield on Friday means the likes of Craig Bellamy are unlikely to feature.

However, Malky Mackay is familiar with the benefits of what cup run-generated momentum can have on league form as his side secured a play-off berth after their Wembley appearance last year and he won’t be taking the Cobblers lightly.

We’ve picked three other selections who look likely to come through the Capital One Cup first round unscathed, contributing to this bumper price.

The longest of these odds is Portsmouth, who are 14/5 to win away at Plymouth.

As the south coast club continue to flirt with liquidation, one could be forgiven for assuming a Capital One Cup jaunt to Plymouth is the least of their worries.

However, they should take comfort in the fact that only one of the last six clubs that dropped out of the Championship have exited this competition in the first round, a hurdle which has got the better of Plymouth in each of the last four seasons.

Toppling the once Premier League staples, Coventry City, would prove a huge scalp for minnows Dagenham and Redbridge and, given the Sky Blues woeful away form, it seems a real possibility.

Odds of 23/10 appear very generous for the home side to progress as Coventry have won just twice on the road since the turn of 2011.

This woeful run includes an astounding 23 defeats – a full season’s worth of away days – and the Daggers will be looking to heap more misery on their travelling fans tonight.

The final pick is an away win for Ronnie Moore’s Tranmere at a Chesterfield side who fell through the League Two trap door last term.

The Spireites have a dreadful League Cup record, losing their first round matches in nine consecutive seasons, plus they’ve failed to beat Rovers in eight of their last 10 meetings.

League Cup Selections:
Cardiff to beat Northampton Town @ 5/6
Portsmouth to beat Plymouth @ 14/5
Dagenham & Redbridge to beat Coventry City @ 23/10
Tranmere to beat Chesterfield @ 15/8
