Atromitos v Newcastle: Narrow away win plausible for Magpies

Published:

Newcastle are preparing for their first Europa League tie in six years and face a testing trip to Greece to meet Atromitos.

The Magpies are 5/4 to triumph, and they look good to achieve that in the aftermath of an impressive opening-day victory over Tottenham.

Of course, this will represent a completely different kind of challenge for Alan Pardew’s side, and with Atromitos somewhat of an unknown quantity, they may see support at 21/10.

They achieved a surprise fourth-place finish in the Greek Super League last term, and would welcome any potential run in European competition to bolster the club’s profile.

To achieve that, they would realistically need at least a draw in this home tie, and are 23/10 to get it.

With that result far from disastrous for the travelling side too, that price could be worth some attention.

However, what may prove a better bet is for Newcastle to succeed by the narrowest of margins in Greece.

The Toon are 11/2 to win 1-0, and considering they were victorious via this scoreline in three of their last four away matches in this competition, that price appeals.

In two of those games, the Tyneside outfit led at both half-time and full-time, and that seems a plausible outcome once more here at a very tempting 2/1.

On the other occasion of course, it took the Magpies until after half-time to break their opponents down, and that was the case domestically this weekend too.

Therefore, the 4/1 about the sides being level at half-time with Newcastle eventually winning is an appealing prospect also.

Demba Ba got the ball rolling for Newcastle on Saturday, scoring his first goal in six months, and he is 11/2 to follow that up with the opener here.

His Senegalese team-mate Papiss Cisse remains favourite to break the deadlock however, as a 9/2 hope to notch his first of the season.
