Tottenham a good bet to finish in Premier League top four
Published:Tottenham Hotspur’s top four finish last season may not have been enough to get them Champions League football – but there is every reason to think they can achieve both feats this coming term.
Spurs are 19/10 to finish in the Premier League top four for the third time in four years and that looks like a very tempting punt considering their business so far this summer.
The appointment of Andre Villas-Boas may not have been greeted with universal approval by the Spurs faithful – especially given the popularity of former boss Harry Redknapp – but it could be another shrewd bit of business by Daniel Levy.
The former Chelsea boss has already added Gylfi Sigurdsson to their ranks after he impressed with Swansea City in the second half of last season and he is set to complete the signing of the Ajax captain, Jan Vertonghen in the next few days.
With Gareth Bale also signing a new deal, things are looking up at Spurs and they are currently a better punt than Liverpool – who are also 19/10 – to finish in the top four.
Villas-Boas does not have to overhaul the Spurs squad to the same extent he tried to do at Chelsea and he will surely have learnt from his admittedly numerous mistakes at Stamford Bridge.
Spurs’ cause will also be helped by the uncertainty surrounding the future of Robin van Persie at Arsenal (7/10) and the less than impressive league record of Roberto Di Matteo at Chelsea (1/5) – not to mention the relative inexperience of Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool.
With Manchester City and United priced at 1/33 and 1/14 respectively to finish in the top four, there are realistically only two places to fight for – and backing Spurs to get one of them could prove a lucrative long-term bet.
