Newco Rangers huge favourites for lower league title triumph

Published:

In what could prove an eye-opening season for everybody connected with Rangers, their newco outfit are heavy 1/20 favourites to win the Scottish Third Division.

54-time champions of the Scottish League, Rangers’ failure to live within their means financially has resulted in their relegation to the fourth tier of Scottish football, a level which fans of the club are far from used to seeing them compete at.

As expected, several players are set to leave the club, though a number of impressive talents are to remain with the Old Firm outfit, which understandably makes them clear favourites for the title.

Scottish internationals Lee McCulloch, Lee Wallace and USA international Carlos Bocanegra are amongst those set to stay at the club, and the sheer quality of these players alone would seem to differentiate Rangers from their rivals at the level they are to play at.

It is 8/1 that any other club beats the newco Rangers to the trophy, and punters can alternatively bet on sides to win the league with the Old Firm club removed from the market.

Peterhead are 5/2 favourites to claim the title in that scenario, whilst last season’s runners-up Queen’s Park are 3/1 shots, sharing that price with Stirling Albion, who are under the stewardship of the UK’s youngest manager Greig McDonald, who is just 29.

A bet on this type of market could prove most appealing to punters searching for value, bearing in mind the sheer stature of Rangers, and the amount of fanfare which will surround their matches.

Indeed, the Glasgow outfit will be by far the best-supported Third Division side the country has ever seen, and thus their support even at away matches is likely to dwarf that of the home team they are competing against.

Such a factor, along with the actual quality that remains in the newco Rangers’ playing ranks, seems to make Ally McCoist’s side a shoo-in for the Third Division title at 1/20.
