Jermain Defoe poised for Spurs exit as Reading circle

Reading are set to make a £5million bid for Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe as they attempt to secure their Premier League status.

According to the Metro, the newly-promoted Royals are willing to offer somewhere in the region of £5million for the player – and new Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas is ready to listen to offers.

Defoe has scored goals consistently throughout a career that has seen him play for the likes of Spurs, Portsmouth and West Ham United.

Reading have already snapped up veteran full-back Nicky Shorey, Pavel Pogrebnyak, Danny Guthrie, Garath McCleary and teenager Pierce Sweeney this summer as they look to build a team who can compete in the Premier League.

It’s an ambitious move by Reading but, with Defoe still allegedly yet to get assurances from Villas-Boas regarding his future, there is certainly a possibility it could come to fruition.

Meanwhile, the saga of Andy Carroll’s potential move away from Liverpool continues to generate column inches.

According to the Daily Mirror Fulham are now the lastest team looking to add the player to their ranks.

With Clint Dempsey – who impressed so much for the cottagers last term – set for the exit, Martin Jol is looking to take Carroll from under the noses of AC Milan and West Ham.

Carroll’s exit is still far from certain, with the player allegedly determined to prove his worth to new Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, but, with the rumours continuing, it’s starting to look a distinct possibility.
