Hoddle odds-on for Forest, but smart money on McCarthy
Published:Glenn Hoddle has overnight sprung to the head of the market to be the next manager of Nottingham Forest, but 2/1 looks reasonable value that Mick McCarthy is named as Steve Cotterill’s successor at the City Ground.
A single tweet from Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony is seemingly responsible for the support for Hoddle, who suggested that the former England manager would fit the mould of the new owners in terms of being a big-name appointment.
However, this could have solely been done by MacAnthony to deflect attention away from his own manager Darren Ferguson, who has been touted as the next Forest manager.
This strategy has cleared worked to a degree, with Ferguson now out to 7/2 from 1/1 to move Championship clubs.
Hoddle is as short as 1/2 even though there is a little substance behind the tweet and therefore it is best that he is avoided in the market.
Instead, McCarthy looks the better option and has much the same background as Hoddle, while still being more in touch with the current game.
Hoddle has been out of management since 2006 when struggling to win over the fans at Wolves and this must be a concern for the Al-Hasawi family.
McCarthy has only been out of the game since being sacked by Wolves in February when the board decided that he would not be able to get them out of the Premier League relegation places.
His replacement Terry Connor ended up doing an even worse job which may have enhanced McCarthy’s reputation slightly, while his record in the Championship cannot really be questioned.
He has secured titles with both Sunderland and Wolves and it is 10/1 that whoever takes charge of Nottingham Forest can guide them to the Championship top-spot this season.
