Domestic double a mouth-watering prospect for Manchester City

Published:

After a recent return to the forefront of English football, Premier League champions Manchester City could go one better next year by landing a league and FA Cup double at 9/1.

Whilst last season represented the club’s first league triumph since 1968, it was during the campaign before that they managed to end a 35-year trophy drought.

That long wait for silverware was banished via FA Cup success, and having gone from strength-to-strength since, City could be in line to claim both honours in the same season this term.

In what could prove a vital season in City’s transition to a club consistently battling for honours, a successful defence of their top-flight crown will be prioritised by Roberto Mancini.

Within reason, Mancini would seem to have the power to attract almost any talent he wants to Eastlands, which bodes well for his chances of a league and cup double.

Indeed, they remain a financial superpower within the game, and can dwarf the salaries that their league rivals can offer prospective new signings this term.

With this in mind, significant strengthening of an already mightily impressive squad looks highly likely, and could begin with the addition of Robin Van Persie from Arsenal sooner rather than later.

Van Persie claimed the Premier League Golden Boot award last term with 30 league strikes, and his potent attacking threat would undoubtedly bolster City’s chances of landing further silverware this season.

The Dutchman has outlined a desire to leave Arsenal in order to win trophies, and his 37-goal haul in all competitions during the last campaign signifies he can contribute to a tilt at dual success for City.

Already assured a place in Citizen folklore, Mancini’s claiming of a first ever double for the club would only further cement his legacy, and serve as a further warning to local rivals Manchester United.
