Defending champion Hamilton will face tough test in Germany
Published:Lewis Hamilton heads to this weekend’s German Grand Prix as only the 11/2 third favourite – but there is plenty to suggest he can come away with a victory.
The Englishman is the defending champion and has performed consistently well throughout the season so far.
Things look like settling down off the tarmac as well, with the future of Hamilton – which has long been a subject of speculation – set to be resolved this week.
McLaren are apparently convinced he will sign a new long-term deal as they finally appear to have a car that Hamilton seems relatively satisfied with.
The race returns to the Hockenheim circuit this year as well and Hamilton has always performed with distinction around the track.
He finished a decent fourth last time here and the time before that he produced a scintillating overtaking performance to come from fifth position on lap 50 to claim the chequered flag.
While there is plenty to encourage Hamilton fans, Fernando Alonso is also looking threatening once again.
The Spaniard won the last time the race was staged in Hockenheim and is the 9/2 second favourite for this race.
However, Alonso needed teammate Felipe Massa to let him pass on lap 49 – a team order for which Ferrari were fined $100,000 – for him to claim the chequered flag.
With favourite Sebastian Vettel (5/2) yet to win a race in his homeland or in the month of July, Hamilton could be in a great position to take advantage.
