Watson not without a Wimbledon chance against Radwanska
Published:Heather Watson has already broken new ground by reaching the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time and it is 4/1 that she continues her progress at Wimbledon with a victory over Agnieszka Radwanska.
Sam Smith was the last British woman to reach the last 16 at SW19 back in 1998 and Watson will certainly have her hands full against the current world number three.
Alongside being positioned exactly 100 places above Watson in the WTA rankings, Radwanska has a proven pedigree on grass courts despite the surface being unavailable in Poland.
She won the junior title at Wimbledon in 2005 and has twice reached the quarter finals in the senior ranks.
Therefore, to some 1/6 may seem a fair price on Radwanska, especially as she has only dropped nine games in winning her opening two matches at Wimbledon in straight sets.
Meanwhile, only three games were dropped in seeing off Elena Vesnina in the last round, who was not only ranked higher than Watson, but also defeated Venus Williams in the opening round.
It is 8/15 in the Wimbledon odds that Radwanska beats Watson 2-0.
The big factor in Watson’s chances will be her serve, as so far at Wimbledon, she has enjoyed a quicker serve speed than Radwanska and seen a higher success rate with her first serve.
It is certainly not beyond the realms of possibility that she can take a set off Radwanksa and it is 6/4 that she does indeed win a set or 3/1 that the Pole triumphs 2-1 overall to move into the fourth round.
With the crowd behind her, perhaps best chance will come if she wins the opening set, especially if Radwanska is slow in finding her rhythm.
Thus, the 11/2 that Radwanska loses the first set but wins the match looks enticing, while Watson can be backed at 11/4 just to win the opening set.
