Tottenham plotting double swoop for West Ham pair

Despite promotion to the Premier League last season, the expiration of Robert Green’s West Ham contract will see him become one of the most sought-after Bosman transfers of the summer.

Hammers co-chairman David Gold confirmed over the weekend that the club couldn’t justify a new deal for Green, whose hefty wage demands posed a problem for the newly-promoted side.

Harry Redknapp is ready to step in for the England international though, keen to add a more youthful option to his goalkeeping ranks alongside 41-year-old Brad Friedel, and 38-year-old Carlo Cudicini.

QPR are also interested in the stopper, currently in Poland and Ukraine for Euro 2012, though the prospect of European football would seem to make a White Hart Lane switch the more preferable option.

Meanwhile, he could be joined in North London by his current Hammers team-mate James Tomkins, who is this week the subject of a £5million bid from Tottenham.

Tomkins is one of the country’s most highly-rated young central defenders, and a campaign which saw him named in the Championship Team of the Year has attracted Redknapp’s attention.

Still only 23, Tomkins would be an ideal Spurs signing, as the club prepares for Ledley King’s impending retirement, and Ryan Nelsen’s expected switch to the MLS.

Redknapp has long been keen to add young homegrown talent to his squad, and Tomkins fits the bill, in a position that threatens to become problematic for Tottenham during the coming season.

There is also mass interest in Spurs’ back-up centre half Sebastien Bassong, and so the need for a new central defender is yet more pressing.

Ajax captain Jan Vertonghen is expected to finalise a move to White Hart Lane in the near future, and although West Ham would be reluctant to lose him, Tomkins may soon join the Belgian.
